IN-SITU AND EX-SITU BIOREMEDIATION PROJECTS:
7. Gasoline, jet and diesel fuel soils contaminated - Petroleum product storage terminal

LOCATION:  Tiverton, Rhode Island
PROJECT DATE:  April, 1993 to Present
CLIENT:  Confidential

BACKGROUND: Soils at this 106 acre former petroleum product storage terminal have been impacted with gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel fuel over the course of 50 years. Estimates of the impacted soils range from 200,000 to 400,000 cubic yards.

ACTION TAKEN: Ex-situ bioremediation is being used as the primary remediation technology for this site. The contaminated soils are excavated and screened prior to placement in biobeds for treatment. The windrow method of land farming is being used in the bioremediation process. A custom blended nutrient formulation is added to each biobed. Biological process monitoring and soil analysis is conducted in an onsite laboratory.

EFFECTIVENESS: The project is currently ongoing.
